Charles Clayton Hammonds, Sr., 87, of Kingsport, TN, passed away October 30, 2019, surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness. He was born in Sullivan County to the late Joseph and Maude Hammonds in 1932. He worked at Holston Defense from 1966-1971 after which he went to work at HVCH from 1971-1995, retiring with 24 years of service. He loved spending time with his family and was an expert carpenter; you were lucky if you got to know Charlie. Charlie was a good husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his 3 sisters: Myrtle White, Pearl Linkous and Nella Mae Hammonds; 8 brothers: Farley, James, Ballard, Clarence, Elmer, Paul, Isaac, and Louia.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years and caregiver, Bessie Laney Hammonds; son, Charles Clayton Hammonds, Jr. (Tammy); 3 daughters, Mitzi Carr (Shannon), Shelba Richards (Tom), and Vicki Highfield (Darryl); sister Beulah Scott (Charles). He was a loving papaw to Michaela Hammonds, Yolanda Moneyhun (Kirk), Kristie Richards, David Nickens, Michael Nickens, Chelsea Oliver, Taylor Montgomery, Jeremy Carr (Krystal), and Bo Carr; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2-5pm Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.
A graveside service will be conducted 1pm Monday at Oak Hill Memorial Park
