He graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School and attended Carson-Newman University where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree. He received his Master's Degree from Union College and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves.

J.R. retired from Sullivan Central High School. He enjoyed 24 years of retirement after a lengthy career as a teacher and coach with several local high schools including Holston High School, a place very dear to his heart.

He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who enjoyed playing golf and watching sports on TV, especially college football.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Lee Maddux; his brothers, William, Cecil, Festus, Freddie Lee and George Glen; his sisters, Evelyn, Mary and Nannie; and his stepson, Benjamin D. Bowden.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Bowden Maddux; daughter, Shaun St. Onge and husband, Tim; and their children, Jay and Lauren of Atlanta, GA; sister, Beverly Thetford and husband, Jim of Kingsport; stepchildren, Grady C. Moore, III and wife, Donna; Don K. Moore and fiancée, Melissa Morrison, Amy M. Cody and husband, R. Wayne Cody; and John C. J.R.'s wishes were to be cremated. The inurnment service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday at Oak Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum.
