Barbara S Matthews

Barbara S. Matthews, age 72, of Mt. Carmel, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 9, 2026 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born in West Virginia, she had lived in this area for the last 40 years. She received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Berea College. Barbara retired after having worked for the State of Virginia in Mine and Land Reclamation.

She trusted the Lord at an early age and had pursued a life of faith that would be pleasing to the Lord. She loved to admire and study wildflowers. She and her husband, Michael, enjoyed watching Jeopardy at night. She loved and was loved by her family.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Junior and Vera Mize; and two brothers, Carl and Mike Mize.

She is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Michael Matthews; son, Jarrod Matthews; sisters, Vera June, Maudie and Patricia and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5pm – 7pm on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at Hamlett Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. A service will follow at 7pm with Rev. James Greever officiating.
