Douglas Knapp, of Homer, Alaska, went to be with his beloved Lord and Savior on April 8th, 2026, at 6:30 pm, leaving behind a life marked by faith, service, and enduring impact.
Doug, along with his wife Evelyn, served as Southern Baptist missionaries in Tanzania for twenty-seven years. During that time, he played a central role in a remarkable movement of faith, helping to plant more than 400 churches and personally baptizing over 40,000 people. His work contributed to a generation of believers and leaders whose influence continues today. This extraordinary season was later chronicled in the book Thunder in the Valley, preserving the story of what God accomplished through their ministry.
Known for his gentle spirit and soft heart, Doug lived a long life as a servant. He loved plants and used his farming skills to transform agriculture in Southern Tanzania. Everywhere he went, he told the story of Jesus. He was deeply committed not only to his calling but also to his family. His legacy is evident in his children and in the countless lives changed through his ministry, both in Tanzania and beyond.
Doug is survived by his sons, Dr. Richard Knapp, a pathologist, author, and pastor in Seale, AL, and Dr. Edson Knapp, a radiologist and author in Homer, AK. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, many of whom have a zeal for Christian ministry and missions; thirty-four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 16th, from 1-2 pm at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 2 pm with Pastor Allen Jessee officiating. Pastor Jessee accompanied Doug on his last trip to Tanzania.
Graveside services will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Those wishing to honor Doug’s life may consider supporting Richard Knapp’s ongoing mission outreach in Tanzania.
Doug will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many who were blessed by his life and ministry.
