Douglas ?Doug? A. Newton, 73, Kingsport, died Thursday, February 8, 2007, at his home after a courageous bout with cancer.
Born in Stamford, Connecticut and schooled in New Jersey and New York state, Doug headed South to attend Virginia Tech, receiving a BS degree in 1957 from the College of Agriculture. Prior to graduating, Doug began what would become a 33-year career in radio and TV broadcasting. Much later in life he started a commercial print shop in Kingsport, from which he retired.
Throughout the years, Doug spent many hours in his community working with the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce including service as a V.P. and Director; the Lupus Foundation of America as President of the local chapter, and National Newsletter Committee Chair; the Jaycees, where he was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Membership; Sullivan South High School Kingsport as Advisor to the Graphic Arts Program; and the Tri-Cities Advertising Federation, serving as VP, and ADDY Competition Chair. He was a five-time All American as a Ritualist with the Kingsport Moose Lodge.
Doug joined Rotary in 1990 with the Kingsport Downtown Club, served as President in 1993-94 and has served on virtually all committees in the club. He served Rotary International last year 2005-2006 as District Governor of District 7570. In 1994-96 he served as Assistant Governor, and has served on more than two dozen District committees. He has been honored with the Four Avenues of Service Award and named a Skelton Fellow. Doug is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, Sustainer, and Benefactor.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Gil and Effie Newton; and one brother, Roger Newton.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Newton, Kingsport; a daughter, Mitzi Silber and husband, Craig; two sons, Mark Newton and wife, Lisa, and Barry Newton and wife, Sallie; four grandchildren Cody, Shannon, and Kipp Silber and Blair Newton; a brother, Gilbert Newton, Boise, Idaho; and sister-in-law, Joyce Newton, Phoenix, Arizona..
It was Doug?s wishes to be cremated.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Dr. Craig
Fry officiating.
