Dr. Maurice Ray Stirewalt

Dr. Maurice Ray Stirewalt, 92, went to be with the Lord on August 25, 2026, following a sudden decline. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great‑grandfather, he lived a life marked by faith, service, and a deep commitment to education.

Born in Rowan County, North Carolina, on October 11, 1933, he was the son of the late Ray and Anne Stirewalt. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Faye Stirewalt, and his son, Eric Maurice Stirewalt. Dr. Stirewalt made Kingsport his home since 1989.

He was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College, earning a B.S. in Social Studies and Mathematics, followed by an M.A. in History and Education from Appalachian State University. He later completed his Ed.D. in Community College Administration at North Carolina State University.

Dr. Stirewalt served Northeast State Technical College with distinction, first as Academic Dean, then as Vice President of Instructors and Student Services, and finally as a tenured history professor. He dedicated 28 years of his career to Northeast State. His commitment to his students and his love of teaching were evident in his decision to continue working until his retirement at age 83.

A faithful member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Maurice shared his musical gifts in the choir, bringing joy to all who worshiped alongside him.

He is survived by his daughter, Leigh Bergemann, and her husband, Robert, of Kingsport; his son, David Stirewalt, of New Hill, NC. His grandchildren LTC William Huerth (Lisa), Joshua Huerth (Marissa), Anthony Huerth (Tori), step‑grandson Scott Bergemann, Ray Stirewalt, and Allen Stirewalt. He was the cherished “GGPA” to Lochlan, Leyton, Lewis, Owen, and Mackenzie Huerth. Maurice is also survived by his sister, Kay Dunkley (Ken) and nephew, Chris Dunkley (Susan) of Hattiesburg, MS.

The family will receive friends at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 17, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Life service to follow at 2:00 p.m.
