George Michael Chernesky

George Michael Chernesky, Jr., 82, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family. Born November 14, 1943 in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, George was raised in Philadelphia and graduated from LaSalle College in 1965. After graduation he joined the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant from the ROTC program. George served two tours in Vietnam in 1967-1968 and 1972-1973. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army in 1993. George served as the Joint Staff Comptroller for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1985 thru 2004. He served as President of the Southwest Youth Association (SYA) located in Centreville, Virginia within Fairfax County of Virginia. SYA conducted ten different sports with 16,000 youth participating in these activities. George was very involved in youth sports as a basketball coach and commissioner. After retiring from the Pentagon, George relocated to Kingsport and later to Johnson City. George was a member of the Central Church of Christ in Johnson City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George M. and Lillian F. Chernesky; sister, Elizabeth Goodchild.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Cheryl Jean Chernesky; stepsons, Jason Wynegar of Seattle, Washington and Adam Wynegar of Virginia Beach, Virginia; daughter-in-law, Robin Wynegar of Seattle, Washington; grandchildren, Carson, Cole and John; and nephews, Christopher and David Goodchild.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by The American Legion Posts 3/265. Those who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery 15 minutes prior to the service.
