Jan Rose Barney

Mrs. Jan Rose Barney, age “always 29”, Church Hill, TN passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Sept 9, 2026, at HVH.

Jan was born January 4, “in a year that kept her young”. She is preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, James Michael “Big Mike” Barney, her parents Edythe Sprinkle Carter and Glen G. Carter; and 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Jan is survived by one daughter, Kim Cloud; one son, Mike Barney (Beth); grandchildren Brody Lane Cloud (Delana); Sydney Rose Cloud; Tanner Williams; Makenzie Stogsdill (Jonathan); Haven Barney; Zander Barney; great grandchild Maylee Rose Cloud; step-grandchildren, Connor McClellan (Maddison); Jacob McClellan; Jenna Troutman (Patrick); Kaylee Calvelli (Dave); sister Glenna (Don) Tomlinson; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Jan was born and raised in Virginia, where she met the love of her life, during her early years in school. She later married that love and moved to Kingsport, had two children, and worked full time at Broadstreet Methodist Day Care for many years. She found her calling working in the Garden Center at Lowe’s for 26 years, before finally retiring in 2020 at the age of 77. She loved working in the Garden Center and had many customers, and contractors seek her out for advice since she was known to have the best green thumb around.

She was always happy and had a smile on her face and loved serving her customers at Lowe’s. After her retirement, she spent her time cooking and tending to her flowers. She was an early bird, and kept the roads hot, on her trips to the grocery store, and to Target to find treasures. She loved cooking and collecting recipes and watching her grandchildren playing various sports.

Jan will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, but also very independent, opinionated, and feisty until the very end. She was sharp as a tack, and continued to be that way until the end, but her body could not keep up with her mind. She fought cancer, and won, and then fought even harder to stay healthy with heart and lung issues and was still telling the doctors what she did and did not want to do. Those of you who knew her well, you can smile, knowing she fought and directed the plan until the very end. During her struggles in the last 2 weeks, a good friend told her, “It is up to Him”, and that carried her thru with peace in the very last hour.

Some of the last words she wrote on paper were:

“Smile when you remember me. It isn’t an ending; it’s a new beginning. I will miss my family, and I hope they will miss me.”

“Every day I realize my body is failing, and coming to an end, and I just want the kids to remember me in a happy way, not sad, and be able to joke about all the crazy things they remember me doing.”

“I wonder if they will have a Target or Hobby Lobby in heaven? Would be nice huh? I would buy some more rocks. Ha ha” (IYKYK)

In keeping with Jan’s wishes, no formal services will be held. Her family gathered privately to spend time together with her and say their goodbyes prior to cremation. Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes is honored to serve the family.
