J.D. Smith

J. D. Smith, 84, of Kingsport went to be with the Lord Saturday morning, September 21, 2013, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born in the Indian Springs Community and had resided in Kingsport his entire life.
J.D. was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict and had received a Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Legion Hammond Post #3, and a charter member of Christ Fellowship Church. J.D. was the owner and operator of Center-Dale Service Station since 1958.
He was preceded in death by his parents, D.V. and Lura Elizabeth Wilcox Smith; and his brothers, Ernest, Wayne, and Dean Smith.
J.D. is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shirley Russell Smith; daughter, Teresa J. Roberts and husband, Randall; son, Anthony J. Smith and wife, Audra; one grandson, Dustin B. Chaffin; his brother, Billy O. Smith and wife, Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 22, 2013, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport. The service will follow in the chapel at 7:00 p.m. with Bishop Hagan Webb and Pastor Lester Turner, Sr. officiating.
The graveside service will be on Monday, September 23, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 3/265.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Pastor Wayne Baker for his friendship and visits and to the Legacy Caregivers and to Darlene Bright.
