Joe Alyn Curry

Joe Alyn Curry, age 90, of Kingsport, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2026 at NHC, Kingsport, after a period of declining health. Born in Western, North Carolina, Joe moved to Kingsport as a teenager. He attended Dobyns Bennett High School and later joined the US Navy, traveling the world on the destroyer ship USS Benham. Joe retired from JP Stevens (Chiquola Fabrics). He enjoyed yardwork and being in the sun. He always followed his grandson in whatever sport he was playing.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty Lingerfelt Curry; his parents, Carter and Annie Laura Curry; brothers, Ralph and Aaron (Lefty) Curry; sisters, infant sister, Millie Faye Curry, Mildred Curry Sprinkle and Barbara Ann Curry Oaks (on 2/3/26).

Those remaining that loved him dearly are his daughter, Patty Burton; grandson, Reid Burton and wife Kristin; great-granddaughters, Kennedy and Klaire Burton; sister, Ruth Curry Sproles; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his sweet companion, Murtice Vaughn.

Joe lived a simple life and was most comfortable sitting on his porch, walking the Green Acres neighborhood and wearing his “dungarees” and sometimes even a shirt!

The family will receive friends from 6pm – 7:30pm on Monday, February 9, 2026 at Hamlett Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. You are encouraged to wear your dungarees and casual attire.

A graveside service will be held at 12pm Noon on Tuesday, February 10, 2026 at East Lawn Memorial Park.

A very special thank you to the caring staff of the South wing of NHC, Kingsport; Jellie, Bev, Trish, Holly and most importantly, “Cornbread/Cabbage”, who treated Joe as if he was their own granddaddy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or a charity of your choice.
