John Patrick "Johnnie" McCoog

John Patrick “Johnnie” McCoog, 62, of Kingsport, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, at Johnson City Medical Center following a short illness. Born on October 5, 1963, in Kingston, Pennsylvania, John was the beloved son of the late James Andrew McCoog and Marie Virginia Schaefer McCoog.

John grew up in Dallas, Pennsylvania, where he finished high school before attending West Side Technical School, earning his certification as a master electrician. Over his lifetime, he worked on and off in the trade, applying his skills with pride and dedication. Music was a central part of John’s life—he was a gifted percussionist, guitarist, and vocalist, often performing with his brother at JR’s in Philadelphia. His passion for music later evolved into DJ and karaoke nights in Wildwood and Philadelphia, where he brought people together through laughter and song.

Known for his openness and warmth, John never met a stranger. His empathy and compassionate nature allowed him to make friends wherever he went—often forming deep, lasting connections through the groups he led on Facebook. Later in life, John embraced his spiritual calling, becoming a Reverend with the Universal Life Church alongside his beloved wife, Melinda, whom he met on Facebook and married on November 25, 2018.

John is survived by his wife Melinda; his siblings James Gary McCoog, Mary Dorothy Nichols, Patricia Maria McMahon, Elizabeth Rose McCoog Borowski, Teresa Marie Sibley, and Sandra J Horn. He was preceded in death by his brothers Michael L. McCoog and Daniel A. McCoog.

John has been cremated and will embark on his “last tour.” This journey will begin in Kingsport, Tennessee, travel to Philadelphia for a memorial concert at JR’s Dive Bar, continue to a gathering at the VFW in Dallas, Pennsylvania, and conclude at Mount Olive Township where he will rest with his parents.

John’s spirit will live on in the music, love, and kindness he shared. As he often said, “Be respectful, don’t lie, and don’t steal from me. If you can keep these recommendations, we can be friends forever.”
