Joseph Tipton Slaughter

Joseph Tipton Slaughter, 83, of Johnson City, Tennessee, died on Sunday, March 8 after a brief illness. Joe was born in Kingsport, Tennessee on June 12, 1942, to George Tipton Slaughter and Margie Barbe Slaughter. He was raised in Sullivan Gardens where he recalled carefree days out of doors with his friends from daylight until dark. He attended Sullivan West High School, playing on the school’s basketball team, excelling academically and serving as the State Beta Club President. He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Tennessee leading to a life-long passion for the UT Volunteers. He went on to a career with Eastman Chemical Company. He retired at age 55 and never looked back, instead focusing his time and energy on enjoying his friends and family and life on Boone Lake. He loved being known as “the oldest teenager in Johnson City.” More recently, he received joy from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and from a new and growing faith in Christ.

He is survived by his children, Suzy (Scott) Deneen, Chris (Angie) Slaughter and Molly (Mark) Lenhart, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
