Mary Katherine Short Allison

Mary Katherine Short Allison, 71, of Bristol, TN, peacefully entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 1:10 p.m., surrounded by her family whom she loved so deeply and who loved her beyond measure.

Born in Kingsport, Tennessee, on June 27, 1955, Mary Katherine was the beloved daughter of Homer and Devodia Short. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Duane Allison; her brothers, Jerry Long and Kenny Short; and Duane’s son, David Allison.

She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Senora Smith, and her son-in-law, Tommy Smith; her granddaughter, Candace Kratz, and her grandson-in-law, A.J. Kratz; her brother, George Short; her lifelong best friend and chosen sister, Kathi Boyd; her sister-in-law, Judy Short; Duane’s son, Richard Allison, and wife, Nicki; her grandson, Casey Allison; her nieces and nephews, Christopher (Ashley), Briana (Zachary), Cassie, Meagan, Madison, Peyton, Emersyn, Waylon, and Beau; as well as many extended family members, dear friends, former clients, and colleagues whose lives were forever touched by her kindness.

Mary’s faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of her life. Even during her most difficult days, she chose hope over despair, gratitude over bitterness, and joy over fear. While her family grieves her absence, they rejoice in the assurance that Heaven is now her home.

Of all the blessings God gave Mary throughout her life, loving her family was her greatest joy. She was married to the love of her life, her late husband, Duane, for almost 26 years. Mary was blessed to have found the meaning of true love and commitment through her marriage with Duane and was honored to share her life with him. They are now reunited together in Heaven.

Being a Mom to Senora and a Memaw to Candace were among the greatest treasures of her heart, and she loved them with a depth and devotion that words could never fully capture. The three shared an extraordinary bond—one that transcends her earthly life. Senora and Candace find comfort in knowing that so much of Mary lives on in each of them, and that the love woven between three generations remains unbroken until they are together again.

Mary obtained a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Liberty University and was a Licensed Professional Counselor, but to those who knew her, counseling was far more than a career—it was her calling. She possessed a remarkable gift for listening without judgment, offering wisdom with gentleness, and helping others discover hope when life felt overwhelming. To many of those she counseled, Mary became far more than the person they turned to for guidance—she became someone they trusted deeply, cared for dearly, and often called their friend. She made a difference in the lives of countless individuals and families simply by being there for them.

Four and a half years ago, Mary was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma. From the day of her diagnosis forward, she faced every challenge with extraordinary courage, unwavering determination, and a spirit that inspired everyone privileged to walk beside her. Through surgeries, treatments, procedures, and obstacles, she remained remarkably positive. Her strength was never loud or boastful; it was quiet, steadfast, and deeply rooted in her faith. Those who witnessed her journey saw what true courage, perseverance, and trust in God looked like.

In the final months of her earthly journey, Mary made her home with Senora and Tommy, where, together with Candace, A.J., and Kathi, she was surrounded by immeasurable love and devoted care. She also found constant comfort and companionship in her beloved grand-dog, Maui, her faithful little friend who was rarely from her side. Together, as a family, they considered it a privilege to love and care for her, and this journey is a gift they will treasure forever.

Mary had a special love for the beach, lighthouses, and all things nautical, finding in them beautiful reminders of God’s love, majesty, and guiding light. Lighthouses held an especially meaningful place in her heart—not only for their beauty, but for what they represented to her: standing firm through every storm and offering a guiding light through the darkness. Jesus was her Lighthouse—the One she trusted to guide her through every storm and ultimately lead her safely home. Mary’s life reflected that same light; she was a source of comfort, encouragement, and love to so many, pointing others toward hope even through the storms of her own life.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Ryan Shao and the compassionate staff of Ballad Health Cancer Care, as well as Dr. Rajiv Agarwal and the team at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, for the exceptional care, kindness, and guidance they provided throughout Mary’s journey. Their dedication and compassion brought comfort not only to Mary but also to those who loved her.

Mary’s earthly journey is complete and is a testimony to unwavering faith, enduring love, and quiet strength. Even through her hardest days, she never complained and fought with determination and an unremarkable positive attitude until the very end. She finished her race with courage. Her absence leaves a space that can never be filled, and she will be missed beyond what words can express. Though her earthly journey has ended, the light of her life will continue to shine through every person she loved and every life she touched.

A Celebration of Mary’s Life will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. at Hamlett Dobson Funeral Home in Kingsport, TN with receiving of friends immediately following Mary’s celebration.
