Mary Neil Bussell, 93, of Kingsport, died early Thursday morning, August 7, 2025, at her home. She was born on December 3, 1931, to the late Neal Joseph and Eva Haynes Bussell. Mary graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School, Hiwassee Junior College and East Tennessee State University. She was employed by Scott County School Board and retired from Yuma Elementary School. Known as the last surviving teacher from Cleveland High School, many of Mary’s former students stayed in contact with her through the years. She received numerous awards during her teaching career. Mary was a member of Valley Center United Methodist Church and attended Holston View Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Benny Joe Bussell; and sister, Peggy Carico.
Survivors include her brother, Neal Bussell and wife Sandra of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Marta Wayt and staff, Smokey Mountain Health Care, Melissa Ealey, Chelsea Rose, LeAnne Croteau and very special care giver, Teresa Vermillion for their special care they gave Mary.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 11, 2025, at at Holston View Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Valley Center United Methodist Church at 5860 Stanley Valley Road, Church Hill, TN 37642 or Holston View Methodist Church at 174 Church St., Weber City, VA 24290.
