Mary Opal Riley Sherfey

Mary Opal Riley Sherfey, of Kingsport, went home to be with her Lord and savior on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at the age of 104. She was born on May 25, 1922, in Hancock County, TN. Opal was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Jonesborough, TN. She was a dedicated homemaker; she found joy in maintaining her home and caring for her family. She was skilled in crochet and created many beautiful quilts over the years. Opal will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Sherfey, parents, John and Elizabeth Riley; brothers, Jack Riley and Bill Riley; sister, Jewell Gragg and four children, Tommy Sherfey, Ronnie Sherfey, Gene Sherfey and Yvonne Morrell.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Lynes Sherfey (Gerry); daughters, Carolyn Watts (Junior) and Diane McCready (Charlie); daughters-in-law, Pat Sherfey and Gail Sherfey; son-in-law, Danny Morrell; ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A service will be held on Friday September 11, 2026, at 11:00am at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home and Memorial Park – Blountville, in the small chapel. Pastor Steve Pate and Chaplain Michael Driver will be officiating. The family will be available to visit with friends following the service.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Brookdale – Colonial Heights and Smoky Mountain Hospice for their loving care provided to their mother.
