Maude Bowen Sproles

Maude Bowen Sproles, 103, of Kingsport, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 13, 2025, just weeks after celebrating her 103rd birthday. Born on May 29, 1922, in Duffield, VA, Maude was the sixth of ten children born to the late Echol and Alice Bowen. 

A gifted student, Maude graduated as valedictorian of Fairview High School at the age of 16. She made her home in Kingsport where she worked for many years as a talented seamstress at Belk. Despite being born with only one hand, her skill and craftmanship were widely admired. Maude was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a faithful and longtime member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, where she served and worshiped for many years. Her life was defined by resilience, faith and a deep commitment to her family.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tyler Odell Sproles; daughter, Gloria Sproles Rowe; great-grandson, Casey Jackson Morton; siblings, Mabel, Lula, Ann, Kate, Rebecca, Ruth, June, Helen Jo and Manson.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandy Sproles Cover; son-in-law, Gary Rowe; granddaughters, Gina Rowe Hensley and Whitney Rowe Morton; step-granddaughter, Christy Cover; and her many beloved great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, including Matt Hensley, Taylor Richey (Hensley), Cole Morton and Lindsay Jordan; sister-in-law, Georgia Flannery; extended family and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her presence.

Her legacy is one of strength, humility and love.

The family would like to thank all the staff at The Blake of Kingsport for their love and care for Maude, and also Gentiva Hospice.

The family will receive friends on Monday, June 16, 2025 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at East Lawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant View Baptist Church or a charity of your choice.
