Born 1938 – Passed June 19th, 2026 — Kingsport, Tennessee
Muriel Sandra "Sandy" Mortenson, a source of light, laughter, and love in the Kingsport community, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2026. She leaves behind a legacy defined by her generosity, her devotion to family, and a rare ability to make everyone she met feel deeply valued.
Sandy was a woman who put love into action. Guided by empathy for others, she was deeply active in her community. She spent years empowering others through adult literacy programs and ensuring her neighbors were cared for by delivering for Meals on Wheels. Her capacity for care extended deeply into her own family; Sandy spent over a decade as a dedicated caregiver for her own mother, a testament to her selflessness and enduring devotion.
To know Sandy was to know joy. She possessed a quick wit, an infectious laugh, and a genuinely happy disposition that brightened every room she entered. A consummate host, Sandy loved bringing people together. Her friends will forever cherish the memories of the countless gatherings, parties, and vibrant celebrations she hosted throughout her life.
To be in Sandy’s house is to be surrounded by dozens of flowers and beautiful potted plants. She loved to make things grow and take care of her pets. She cared for a pet turtle for over 50 years.
Of all her roles, Sandy was perhaps most adored as a grandmother. Her grandchildren hold a treasure trove of cherished memories from holidays spent at her house, which was always filled with warmth, delicious food, and unconditional love.
Sandy leaves behind a family that loved her fiercely and will miss her dearly. She is survived by her loving husband, DeWayne; her sister Susan, her son Steven and daughter Diane, Susan’s husband, John, Steve’s beloved wife, Betsy; and Sandy’s adored grandchildren, Chloe, Louis, Joshua, Nicholas, and Shelby. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 27 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Kingsport Tennessee to be followed at 11:00 a.m. by a celebration of Sandy’s beautiful life, officiated by The Rev. Scottie Burkhalter.
