Ping Peter Shang

Ping Peter Shang, 76, of Kingsport, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, May 15, 2026. Born in Taiwan in 1950 and moved to the United States in 1977 to study at NC State where he received his master’s and PhD in Polymer Science. Peter met his loving wife of 45 years, Shochin while at NC State. Following graduation, Peter moved to Kingsport and began working for Eastman Chemical Company. He worked as a chemist until his retirement in 2016. Peter holds several patents with Eastman and was recognized as a thermal analysis expert and made significant contributions on many Eastman projects. Peter loved to travel and went with family to many countries in Europe, South America and South Africa.

He was a beloved big brother to five siblings, four younger sisters and one younger brother.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Chiusan and Jihying Soong Shang.

Survivors include his wife, Shochin Shang; sisters, Lily Shang, Shirley Shang, Pauline Shang, Marina Shang; and brother, Lien Shang.

The family will receive friends at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home on Saturday, May 23, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
