Randy Carlos Honaker was born on June 26, 1951 in Grundy, VA. He graduated from Haysi High School in 1969, where he was voted “Wittiest Senior” by his classmates. He played basketball and football throughout his high school years.
Upon graduating high school, Randy moved to Detroit and on to Richmond, finally landing in his favorite place in the world, Piney Flats. Randy was a huge fan of the old rock n’ roll or “real music” as defined by him and he would complain about other music, “Don't they know more than three chords?!”. Randy was the drummer in a band called “St. James Infirmary” formed with his high school friends. They played at different school events, in local bars and honkytonks in Southwest Virginia, and once played at Hiwassee College. Randy was an avid Tennessee Vols fan from early on, as evidenced by his Tennessee Vols themed room, and personally decorated “Man Shed”. On game days he hosted family and friends showing off his grill master skills while listening to his home-made mixed tapes on the deck in Piney. When anything would happen, good or bad, his commentary would always be, “How bout them Vols?!”
Randy began his career delivering milk for Piggly-Wiggly, a carpenter with his close friends in Richmond before landing his UPS driver role of 25 years. He proudly retired on the very first day of retirement eligibility at the young age of 57. Randy had a love/hate relationship with golf, played poker with family and friends, was perpetually tormented by three generations of “Rife Girls” and was a “fixer” of anything his daughter asked. He was proud to hold his self-proclaimed title for 31 years–“yard of the week”!!
He met his beautiful wife of 34 years, Tammy, on South Holston lake. They built a memorable life together, married in 1999 in Las Vegas at The Little White Chapel. They blended a family, Wesley, Chad, Cody and along came Miranda.
Randy was preceded in death by his grandmother, Dora Wallace; his son, Cody Rhen Honaker; and his grandson, Jameson Cody Stacy.
Randy will be remembered for his quick-wit, love of Budweiser, dance moves, and be forever loved by his wife, Tammy; his daughter and son-in-law, Miranda and Gavin Stacy; his granddaughters, who affectionately called him Pop Pop - Rayleigh and Ila Stacy; step-sons, Wesley and Chad Pries; granddaughters, Kandon, Reagan, and Sofia; grandsons, Rockne and Weston; great-grandsons, Carter and Cole; his buddy, Spencer Adkins, and brother, sisters-in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 2:00–4:00 PM at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home in Kingsport. The final thirty minutes of the gathering will be dedicated to sharing special memories and stories about Randy. Those in attendance are encouraged to bring a favorite story or cherished memory of Randy as we remember and celebrate his life together.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Pat Summitt Foundation. Randy was a great admirer of Pat Summitt and the impact she made both on and off the court.
