Robert R. "Bob" Woodard

Robert R. “Bob” Woodard, 86, of Kingsport, TN peacefully transitioned into a new beginning on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

Born February 9th, 1940 in Sullivan County, Bob was the son of Vernon Woodard and Frances Shockley. Bob served in the Army National Guard for 12 years and worked at Holston Defense Corporation for over 20 years. On January 5, 1979, Bob married Wilma Fleenor Powers and they lived at times in Arizona and Texas during their 48 years of marriage.

Bob is known as the man from whom the TV character “MacGyver” learned all his tricks. Bob was skilled in multiple trades from which he earned a comfortable living for himself and Wilma. He was also famous for restoring classic vehicles and taking solo cross county motorcycle tours. As a husband, parent, and friend, Bob is remembered as a compassionate and peaceful soul who earned the respect and admiration of all who knew him. He was the Good Lord’s faithful servant with a heart to match.

Bob was preceded in death by his mother and father, his brothers, Wayne and Vernon, Jr., and son, Don Woodard. He is survived by his wife, Wilma, his sisters Vicki Dodson, Paulette Thomas, and Frankie Bowling, and his daughter Anita McCarthy and stepson, Mitch Powers. Grandchildren were a great joy to Bob and include Brendan Woodard, Kelli Weaver, Tyler McCarthy, Amanda Powers, Jackson Powers, Hayley Reed, and great grandchildren, Jessica Weaver, Harley Weaver, Theseaus McCarthy, Mackenzie and Jackson Reed, and Bond Powers.

In keeping with Bob’s preferences, no services are planned. Those wishing to comment on their love for Bob or offer support to family, may do so through the Kingsport Hamlett-Dobson obituary website. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider donations to Sullivan County charities of your choosing.
