Ivan Russell Thornberry III went home to Heaven on Wednesday April 15, 2020 after an extended illness.  He was born August 31, 1948 in Johnson City. Russ was a graduate from Dobyn’s Bennett High School, attended ETSU with a bachelor’s degree in business and The University of Utah with a master’s degree in business administration. He served as an officer in the US Army in the Transportation Corps.  He was a former member of the Johnson City Sail and Power Squadron, and a long-time member of the Rotary.  He is already greatly missed by his family and friends.

Russ was a good friend, devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather.  He loved his family and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with them.  His love of life and his outgoing personality endeared him to those around him.  He loved to laugh and he loved to make others laugh; he always made life fun.  He was a hard worker, an excellent cook, and he loved being on the lake in his boat.

For over 25 years, Russ worked for John Deere Health/United Health Care.  He was described by his coworkers as a calm, intelligent leader, who was admired by his peers and supervisors alike.  He always looked for the best in people and carried a special level of professionalism.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Shirley Thornberry,  He is survived by his wife, Sherry Thornberry; daughters, Gwen Wilcox and husband James of Temecula, CA, Kristi Bartley and husband Mark; sons, Ivan Russell Thornberry IV and wife Deanna of Menifee CA, and Larry Yakley Jr and Ashley; granddaughters, Hannah and Katie Wilcox, Eliana and Liv Thornberry, Erika Johnson and husband Chance; grandsons, Alex Wilcox, Ivan Thornberry V, Trae Yakley, and Brayden Bartley; great granddaughter Kahryssa Harvey; great grandson, Aleczander Johnson; his sister Kathy Reed; nephews Jason Reed and wife Joey (Colt and Scarlet), Jonathan Reed and wife Amanda (Haley and Ryland).

Due to the Covid-19 virus the family will have a private service at First Christian Church, Kingsport with Minister Phip Sams officiating.  Burial at Oak Hill Cemetery, Wednesday April 22.  However, when restrictions are lifted, the family plans to have a Celebration of Life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Christian Church, 106 E Charlemont Ave, Kingsport, 423-247-5159 or any food bank, meals on wheels of your choice.
