Larry Gene Varner

KINGSPORT – Larry Gene Varner, 65, made his journey to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior on May 13, 2020.  Larry was born to Ray and Paula Varner, who both preceded him in death.  He also has three brothers:  Bud Varner, Jerry Varner, and Jim Varner, who is deceased.

Larry is a retired airline pilot and instructor who became an entrepreneur, owning two successful businesses in Kingsport.  Store-It-Right, a large storage facility located on Stone Drive and Kingsport Sports Club.  His jovial demeanor and caring spirt endured him to employees as well as his valued customers.  He sold both businesses to enjoy actual retirement with his wife, Kathy Cassidy Varner.

Larry and Kathy enjoyed a quiet life, living on the river in Southwest Virginia.  Oftentimes, Larry could be found using a john boat or kayak to float the river with Kathy or neighbors who were more like friends.  Fishing was a passion for Larry, bringing him the peace and serenity the quite life offered.

He was a member and regular attender of Blessed Hope Baptist Church.  Larry considered fellow church members as part of his family.  He especially enjoyed the life application sermons and choral performances from Blessed Hope.

In addition to his parents and brother, Larry is preceded in death by Alma Cassidy, his mother-in-law; his brother-in-law, Wallace Grills; and his sister-in-law, Vicki Mullins.  Surviving family members include his wife, Kathy; his brothers, Bud and Jerry; other beloved sister- and brother-in-laws; cherished nieces and nephews; and lifelong friends.

A private family gathering is planned at East Lawn with Pastors Frank Waldo and Travis Pierson officiating.  Honorary pallbearers include Mitchell Allen, Chip Childress, Sam Mullins, Timothy Mullins, Brian Waldo, and Chris Wright.

In lieu of flowers, Kathy asked that contributions be made to the Central Baptist Food Bank, 301 Carver Street, Kingsport, TN  37660.
