Peggy Davis

Margaret (Peggy) Davis passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 in Kingsport following a brief hospital stay. Her birthdate is “unknown” except to God (and her children who saw her driver’s license).

Peggy was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan.  She received a degree in Early Childhood Education from Hillsdale College, where she met many lifelong friends as part of her membership of the Rho Gamma chapter of Chi-Omega.  She also received additional graduate education at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Michigan, and the University of Colorado.

After college she returned to Detroit, and taught kindergarten in Royal Oak, Michigan before going to Kaiserslautern, Germany in 1955 to teach first grade.  While in Germany, she met Bob Davis, who she married on November 20, 1956 in Detroit.  Bob and Peggy subsequently moved to Elmhurst, Illinois, where she taught first grade.  In 1962, Bob and Peggy moved to Kingsport, Tennessee, and she continued to teach kindergarten in Scott County, Virginia for many years.  In Kingsport she made many friends through First Broad Street church, Chapter V of PEO, the schools where she taught, and elsewhere in Kingsport.  She was especially fond of parties – especially if she could dress up in a hat or a fun costume!

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband Bob Davis – her loving husband of 47 years, her parents Louise and David McCarthy, and her brother Thomas McCarthy.

She is survived by her daughter Kim and her husband Fred Sahms of Knoxville, Tennessee; her son Brant and his wife Catherine Davis of Newton, Massachusetts and their children Benjamin and Matthew.

Peggy loved life with her many, many friends and her loving family - especially her grandsons Benjamin and Matthew.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2019, at 1 p.m. at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. Ladies are invited to wear a hat to the service! There will be a celebration of her life at the church following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Broad Street United Methodist Church, 100 East Church Circle, Kingsport, TN 37660.
